Nanah Goat
Nanah Goat traveled with Shelter Manager Tye and his wife Ann, (our Administrative miracle worker and Store Manager) to Cornell!
This is a planned trip. Nanah has some persistent issues that began last summer. She is an older goat, middle aged to senior. In the summer she had enlarged teats (of course not pregnant) that did decrease. But in the fall, she began to exhibit a pretty relentless behavior pattern - abnormally acting out as a fertile male goat type behavior! (She is not intersex to our knowledge). She received the medical treatment for cystic ovaries, but that is only effective about 70% of the time, and her behavior did not change.
Miss Nanah is at Cornell for a spay appointment (not a Spa day!) All her goat buddies are hoping this solves her issues! We will keep you posted.
(Our male goats are all neutered, but female goat spay…

Update on Eddie Goat
IIn the world of Sanctuary, our residents are "allowed to grow old." For each of them, that means different things. We want to share the necropsy results for Eddie Goat with you, because we don't always get clear answers in this work. When we do, it helps us other rescues, and the medical team.
Eddie was laid to rest over a week ago, and we allow the team at Tufts Veterinary Hospital to learn from the opportunity to perform a necropsy. For Eddie: lungs were clear, nasal area was clear, but there was a large tumor in his chest. It was not visible on the radiographs, and would really have been only apparent on exploratory surgery. The tumor was affecting the nerves in his larynx, which was first evident two weeks ago. There was nothing more we could have done for sweet Eddie. I am glad we were able to…

Poor baby. Several years ago, we lost one of our labs to a similar slow moving tumor in his abdomen. I'm glad Eddie had lots of loving and a team that kept him from suffering. Sweet Eddie will be missed.

Will it be warmer soon?
Brutally cold this morning! 1F on the thermometer, but we had a lot of wind chill all morning.
We keep coop doors closed until sun can shine on the areas the birds will walk and stand. Our Muscovy ducks are vulnerable to frostbite, so we are watchful. One brief moment this morning was a mini-bloodbath when Everest the Rooster managed to break a spur (oh my) on his leg, but the team got that cleaned and sealed quickly.
5" of snow yesterday will be joined more on Tuesday night, so we are moving that around too. There will be some days that are above 32F this week, or so the rumor goes. While Dudley and the sheep and the alpaca have the coats to deal with this, I am pretty sure Lunchbox and his pig buddies have a distinct desire to see spring weather asap!
Sweetie has been distracted a…
Our rescues are in the hands of the most amazing Caregiver team! So grateful for everything they do every day 🙏🏻 Healing thoughts for Ella Mae and Marky 🧡

Pony Boy

This was a heavy week: we recently lay Penny Blossom to rest with her skin cancer coming to the end of that journey. Sweet elderly Eddie Goat, and his breathing issues came to a conclusion this week as well, as he was laid to rest.
I am going to describe a thought I had today. It is a heavy week because we are catching the heaviness as is slips away from some beloved rescues. They were ready to take flight, in much needed lightness, letting their heaviness fall away. It is the privilege of Sanctuary to help the older and sicker rescues when it is their time to journey onward and up.
Our Pony Boy has been a beloved member of our equine buddies for the last couple of years. His severe Cushings, metabolic disorder, and laminitis have been mostly stabilized in 2025. But the radiographs this week confimed our…
