Compassion is the next step from experiencing empathy. Empathy allows you to acknowledge the feelings of another being, but compassion bridges that feeling to the understanding and a potential for action. Compassion is feeling what that living being is feeling, grasping a hold of it, accepting it, and then taking action.
We can't be perfect in avoiding harm to all other living beings. We can cause some amount of harm to beings simply in our being alive. We can limit the harm done in our lives as much as it is feasible. It if possible to be kinder, why wouldn't we want to do that?
Each step toward more compassion is truly beautiful.
